The Project X Utility (U) is a 0.370 tip, 40.5 inch long utility iron or hybrid shaft. It is designed to compliment the Project X iron shafts. After seeing it I wish more iron shaft companies would design similar compliments to their popular iron shafts.

I use steel shafts in strong player hybrids. This usually means using a tapered 2 iron shaft with a shim. The shim is necessary to put a 0.355 shaft into todays typical 0.370 hybrid hosel. The advantage of using steel in a hybrid is a combination of cost and consistency. Steel is 3 to 4 times the cost of a premium carbon fiber shaft. And, it matches the feel and rigidity of the strong players irons making it a perfect extension of the iron set.

The N.S Pro Modus3 Tour105 was released to the US public in August 2015. I had seen a set of these earlier in the year, labeled Prototype ST. The Modus3 Tour 105 is the same shaft that has been available on tour for several months. The word Prototype has been replaced with Modus3. I have been told it was put in play by a number of players. Lighter weight iron shafts are gaining broader acceptance in the tour community.

I am revisiting this review with a new look at the charts and numbers. As I prepared graphics for a speech to European club fitters I saw something in the charts that got my attention. A close look at the shafts confirmed what I saw in the graphics.

The Project X Loading Zone steel shaft is getting a lot of tour play. Our tester with a 117 mph driver speed has made the Project X LZ 6.5 his gamer in his irons. Now the same brand name is on a 90 gram carbon fiber shaft for those of us with more modest swing speeds. I first noticed the shaft when my 2017 Mizuno fitting cart update arrived. This year’s 90g shaft from Mizuno is the Project X Tour LZ in a 5.0 and 6.0 flex.

What really got my attention was the FlexLoc torsional bands in the mid section of the shaft. These are the same bands used in the Project X LZ driver shafts. In the driver shaft, these band maintain stable torque and hoop strength through a section of the shaft with reduced wall thickness that created the soft midsection loading zone.

The ACCRA Concept Series started in 2014 with the ACCRA Concept CS1 which is now called the Concept Series 300. The Concept CS1 was the first shaft I can recall from ACCRA  that was produced in a Japanese foundry. With it ACCRA shafts deliver the ultra premium shaft quality seen in high end Japanese golf shafts. The ACCRA Concept Series 400 is a variation of the Series 300 design aimed at reducing launch and spin.

This discussion of ACCRA shafts was shot at the 2016 PGA Merchandise show.

Lets take a look at the shaft measurements.

What new product can a company offer to strong golfers when they already have two of the most popular shafts in play on the PGA tour, the Dynamic Gold X100 and the Project X? We have seen the addition of the 7.0 flex of the Project X. That is a big number. How about hanging a Seven on the iconic Dynamic Gold brand. I see the Dynamic Gold X Seven profile as more like the Project X than a Dynamic Gold X100.

Mitsubishi has released the fourth generation of the classic Blue Profile. Like the third generation B, it is made using the proprietary high density Mitsubishi prepreg, Dialed and Mitsubishi MR70 fiber. The fiber is 20% stronger and 10% heavier than conventional prepreg. New is Boron Fiber is added to the tip section of the Diamana BF. One might assume that is what the BF indicates. What exactly can we see in the shaft measurements between the Third Generation B series and the BF.
